Weekly Roundup (July 14-19)
Hey Anchorage 👋
The forecast has me wondering if the wet season is settling in for the year. I’m glad I managed to sneak in a hike last weekend with my neighbor over at McHugh Creek Trailhead before fully accepting our soggy fate.
Rain or shine, there’s a lot happening this week. Rock the Hill, local makers on the museum lawn, vintage shopping, and a few local updates worth knowing.

🏫 Anchorage School Board Adds Back 60 Teachers
The Anchorage School Board approved adding back about 60 teaching positions using one-time state funding. The district had cut more than 300 teaching positions earlier this year while facing a major budget deficit, and school leaders said restoring classroom teachers was the top priority for the new funds.
🍦 Three Alaska Dairy Queens Abruptly Close
Three of Alaska’s four Dairy Queen locations recently closed, including the Anchorage Tudor Road location, along with stores in Wasilla and Palmer. The closures leave Soldotna as the only Dairy Queen still operating in Alaska. No explanation was given for the closures, which mark a sudden turn for a franchise that once saw record-breaking sales when the Tudor Road shop first opened.
🔋 Don’t Toss Vapes in the Trash
Anchorage Solid Waste Services is reminding residents not to throw vapes or lithium-ion batteries in the trash, after an increase in landfill fires linked to rechargeable batteries. Vapes and other lithium battery items should be taken to a Household Hazardous Waste facility, where Anchorage residents can drop off up to 40 pounds per day for free.
