Weekly Roundup (Jun 2-7)

Hey Anchorage πŸ‘‹

I hope you enjoyed last weekend as much as I did. It's not every week that the sunshine lines up so nicely with the weekend. I ran the Twilight 6K hosted by Skinny Raven Sports, chopped firewood in the yard, and took my dog down to Ship Creek to see if we could spot anyone catching a king salmon.

I added a new πŸ’‘ Worth Knowing section this week after coming across a handful of stories that I thought were worth knowing as a local. My goal is to make this Anchorage's favorite email, so I'd love to hear what you're enjoying most and what you'd like to see more (or less) of in future editions.

In the Roundup this week:

  • ⭐️ Top Picks of the Week

⭐ Top Picks of the Week

πŸŒ™ Summer Night Market β€” F St. & 6th Ave. (Fri, 5:30PM)
The Summer Night Market returns this Friday for opening night of its second season downtown. Browse local vendors, grab a bite to eat, and catch live music from H3 while spending an evening with friends, family, and neighbors. If you're already heading downtown for First Friday, this makes for an easy next stop.

πŸŽ₯ Anchorage Parks + Trails Film Fest β€” Bear Tooth (Thu, 5:30PM)
A night of locally-made films celebrating the parks, trails, and outdoor spaces that shape life in Anchorage. Part storytelling, part inspiration, this one is likely to have you planning your next adventure before the credits roll. It's also a good reminder of just how many incredible places we have right here in our backyard.

🎢 Hot Club of Nunaka β€” Balto Seppala Park (Thu, 7PM)
The Anchorage Concert Association's Summer Concert Series kicks off this week, bringing free live music to neighborhoods across the city all summer long. Grab dinner from a food truck and settle in at the park while Hot Club of Nunaka brings their blend of Django Reinhardt-inspired jazz to the first show of the season.

🐢 Yappy Hour: Happy Hour for Dogs β€” 49th State Brewing (Fri, 4:30PM)
Yappy Hour returns to 49th State Brewing this Friday, giving dogs and their humans a chance to kick off the weekend together. Expect live music, dog treats, and plenty of four-legged socializing in the beer garden and Dogs of 49th State Dog Park.

πŸ’‘ Worth Knowing

🎣 King Salmon Are Back in Ship Creek

The first Ship Creek king salmon of the 2026 season. πŸ“Έ The Bait Shack

Cody Turner of Anchorage reeled in the first king salmon on May 26. The fish measured 28 inches and weighed 8.95 pounds. Cody had a feeling it was going to be his day. He even called out of work after dreaming about catching the first king a few nights earlier.

Fishing the incoming tide with a Blue Fox Vibrax, he hooked the fish, watched line peel from his reel, and landed what would become the first king salmon of the Ship Creek season.

Several more kings have been caught since, and anglers continue to line the creek hoping to land one of their own.

πŸ— Town Square Park Is Closing for Construction
Anchorage officials broke ground on the Town Square Park reconstruction project last Thursday, May 28. The park is expected to close this week as work begins on a major renovation.

The $5 million project will add improved lighting, better sight lines, new event spaces, and a redesigned layout intended to make the park more welcoming year-round.

🚦 Speeding Study Underway on Tudor & Muldoon
New speed feedback signs are being installed along Tudor and Muldoon as Anchorage and state transportation officials study pedestrian safety along the corridor. Residents can share feedback on current speed limits at a public open house on June 10.

🚲 New Trail Connection Breaks Ground
Construction is underway of a new one-mile trail connection between the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail and Ship Creek Trail. The project is expected to be completed in 2027.
