This week brings Oktoberfest, fall festivals, seasonal drinks, and plenty of reasons to get outside before the season gets away from us. There’s also a new taco spot, a major change at the Alaska Native Medical Center, and Anchorage’s Yup’ik immersion program continuing to grow.

The Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium now officially owns the Alaska Native Medical Center after decades of operating the Midtown hospital with Southcentral Foundation. Ownership transferred from the federal Indian Health Service late last month.
The change gives ANTHC greater control over the hospital and its future investments. The consortium has already approved more than $462 million in improvements, including an expansion of the emergency department.
🗣️ Yup’ik Immersion Program Continues to Grow
Anchorage’s Yup’ik immersion program is expanding again. Launched at College Gate Elementary in 2018, the program now extends through 8th grade at Wendler Middle School, with plans to add high school grades next year. Students spend half the school day immersed in Yup’ik language and culture and the other half learning reading and math in English.
