Weekly Roundup (Sep 22-27)
Hey Anchorage 👋
Fall officially starts today, although Anchorage has been getting the memo for a while now.
This week brings Oktoberfest at Alyeska, a weekend of comedy, the Anchorage Symphony’s opening night, and plenty more happening around town. There’s also a new healing garden at the Alaska Native Heritage Center, a new Fresh Cup Playhouse location in Eagle River, and an early look at what El Niño could mean for Anchorage this winter.

🌨️ What Could El Niño Mean for Anchorage This Winter?
A very strong El Niño is expected this winter, but its impact on Anchorage isn’t as clear as some of the national headlines might suggest. Current outlooks lean slightly warmer, and past strong El Niño winters have generally brought less snow than Anchorage typically sees.
There’s plenty of uncertainty, though. During three previous very strong El Niño winters, Anchorage received anywhere from about 38 to 71 inches of snow, with temperatures still occasionally dropping below zero. The takeaway: a somewhat warmer, less snowy winter may be more likely, but big snowstorms and cold snaps are still very much on the table.
🏆 Chugiak Student Heads to National Civics Bee
Chugiak High School freshman Elara Bradley is heading to Washington, D.C., after winning Alaska’s National Civics Bee state championship. The 13-year-old will compete against students from across the country on Oct. 14.
Bradley’s project focuses on darkness-related health issues in Alaska, including vitamin D deficiency and seasonal affective disorder. She’s advocating for ideas like therapy lights in schools and greater access to foods rich in vitamin D.
