We’re heading into week two of Fur Rondy, and it’s been so cold this year I’m ready to rename it Brr Rondy. At the same time, Anchorage has been putting on a show. The sunsets have been unreal, and last night’s moonrise over the Chugach Mountains looked straight out of a postcard.

The Iditarod Ceremonial Start rolls through downtown this weekend, and it’s hands down my favorite winter tradition. There’s something about sled dogs thundering down 4th Ave that never gets old.

🎉 Fur Rondy Festival — Downtown (Mar 3–8)
Anchorage’s biggest winter celebration rolls into its second week downtown with snow sculptures, the carnival, classic competitions, and nonstop downtown energy. With more than 50 events packed into the schedule, there’s always something happening. Full schedule on the Fur Rondy website.

🐾 Iditarod Ceremonial Start — 4th Ave & D St. (Sat, 10AM)
Downtown fills with sled dogs, mushers, and thousands of spectators as the 2026 Iditarod kicks off with its Ceremonial Start. Teams depart from 4th Ave & D St. in three-minute intervals for an 11-mile run through Anchorage before the race heads north.

🦌 Running of the Reindeer — 4th Ave & H St. (Sat, 4PM)
An iconic Fur Rondy event returns as runners sprint down 4th Avenue alongside live reindeer. It’s less about speed and more about spectacle, costumes, and pure chaos. Crowds pack the streets for this high-energy tradition benefiting Toys for Tots. Registration $35.

📸 Iditarod Through the Lens — Wildbirch Hotel (Fri, 6PM)
An Iditarod photography exhibit featuring official race photographers Siri Raitto and Dave Poyzer. Striking images from remote checkpoints and sweeping wilderness capture the bond between mushers and their teams. Free and open to the public, with complimentary Alaskan Brewing samples for guests 21+ from 6-7PM.
